It’s no secret that healthcare costs continue to go up. Doctor’s visits, prescription drugs and medical facilities and testing are getting more expensive each year. It can be frustrating to try and keep up with these costs, especially if you have an ailment that requires regular attention. However, that doesn’t mean that there is nothing you can do to reduce the costs. Remember, even a decrease of $10 a month is a savings of $120 a year. Here are some things you can do that will help you to save hundreds of dollars a year in healthcare costs:
- Prescription Drugs: If you are taking several prescription drugs and they are costing you a lot of money each month it may benefit you to take some time to look for generic versions that are less expensive. If that’s not an option you can also try calling the manufacturer or visiting their site to see if they have coupons or asking your doctor if they have free samples they can part with.
- Clinics: Many pharmacies now offer clinics which are great because they do not have the costs or wait time of most doctors’ offices. Obviously, you cannot go to a clinic for a serious ailment but in the case of a common cold, allergies, rashes and other minor ailments, it’s less expensive to go to a clinic.
- Improve Your Health: It may seem obvious but for a lot of people, eating healthier, drinking more water, getting more exercise, quit smoking and doing other things to improve your health will actually save you hundreds of dollars or more a year in healthcare.
- Do annual checkups: Wait, to save money you need to go to the doctor when you feel fine? Actually yes, studies have shown that people who visit the doctor at least once a year for a checkup actually save money in the long-run. Think of it like taking your car into the mechanic when everything is running well. They can fix things before they break and cause more damage. Obviously, you’re not a car but because your insurance will cover most visits and exams once you hit your deductible, spending the money early in the year isn’t a bad thing.
We all want to save money and if you can reduce your healthcare costs by a few hundred dollars a year it’s a bonus. Remember, the better you take care of your body, the more your chances improve of saving money over the year.
